I bought this book just a week or so before Salinger died. I finished the book I was reading a few days after his passing and decided to finally read this alleged masterpiece — and masterpiece it is, indeed. I wish I would have read it when I was 17, but alas, I waited until age 31. Nevertheless, I remember what it was like to be 17, and honestly, I related to the character Holden Caulfield a lot today; even as a married father and professional “phony.” I can only imagine how utterly groundbreaking this book must have been when it was first published in 1951.
What I loved about the book: I could say “everything,” because I did, but I’ll give a few specifics. First, I loved the voice in which it was written. Holden is sarcastic, snotty, and just way too cool for almost everything — just like I was when I was 17. I loved the exaggerations and hyperbole. I identified with his descent into near-madness, being in that awkward stage between childhood and adulthood, not knowing what to do, not really understanding or not wanting to deal with the consequences of your actions, really just not being ready to grow up. As Holden wanders New York in a sleep-deprived stupor, he explores these issues within his mind; he jumps from one feeling to another, and breaks down and cries more than once. It truly is a powerful novel, and one of the three best I’ve ever read. Five stars all the way.
The book is just 214 pages and a breeze to read. If you haven’t read it, you should. I’ve been reading a lot of “classic” novels lately and this is the first one that I know for a fact I will be reading again in the future. I could see myself reading this every couple of years for the rest of my life — it was that good.

This is truly one of the best book I’ve read in a long time. Growing in the north, I had no idea what life was like in the south. Sure I’d heard of the civil rights movement but it wasn’t something we northerners, particularly the Northwest where I’m from, had never really understood. Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel gives us a glimpse into the lives of both the black maids and the white women they worked for in a way leaves judgment up the reader. It was amazing to me that the white women were afraid that the black women who raised their babies and cooked for them, were carrying some sort of special germs, and therefore should have not be allowed to use the same bathrooms. Held hostage by the unspoken rules they’d grown up with, both the black and the whites of this story fear breaking out and doing things differently.
I was spellbound by the story, by the new world I was allowed to enter and the characters who I learned to care deeply for. This is a book that someone recommended to me and I’m so glad they did. Now I’m going to do the same for all my friends. Bravo Kathryn! If this is your debut novel, I wish you a long and fruitful writing career, and I’m going to buy every one of your books.

To put this in perspective I am 81. When I was first introduced to this game my thought was, this is for children. When I started playing the tennis game I found I was getting an enjoyable aerobic workout. I have since purchased my own Wii sports package game and have truly enjoyed the game and the health benefits derived from it. I would highly recommend this for all ages. The only reason I rated the game over all at 4 stars is that I wish they had made the game so it could be played one on one as well as they have it now with two people on each side.

Holden Caulfield has just been kicked out, yet again, of a preparatory school which his father, a hot-shot corporate lawyer, has selected for him. Holden is a pathological lawyer, he smokes like crazy, and he prefers the peak of his brand-new red hunting cap to be facing backward, not forward. Holden begins wandering around New York City, buying time before the date comes when his parents will be expecting him.
Such are the plot details, and the wonderful character painting, that this wonderful little novel unveils early in its course. The Catcher is a fast-paced and an easy read, two qualities which typically don’t go along with works of literature. Is the Catcher a work of literature? The answer is an unqualified yes. Salinger has accomplished an amazing feat by relaying his story through the first-person narrative of our protagonist, and the writing is complete with Holden’s idiosyncratic jargon and constant lacings of profanity. Yet what makes the writing so remarkable is that we know exactly what Holden is talking about it, even though his slang can be a little confusing at times.
Still, what makes this little gem a literary genius is not its exceptional writing, but its wide appealing cultural value. I think it would be immature and cliched to call this a “coming of age” book (even though it is one), or to talk about Holden’s prototypical “teenage angst”. In my opinion, this novel finds its far-reaching appeal because it speaks to the heart of us all. We all get discouraged (and even disgusted) by the faults that we see in society, and in human nature in general (for example, the “phoniness” which Holden sees as near ubiquitous). Nevertheless, all of us have to make decisions, just like Holden does, as to what direction we choose to walk in life.
A final note. I loved this book and found myself laughing out loud throughout many parts of the book. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if this novel isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I suspect that some readers will

The Furminator removed so much hair from our short-haired mixed breed I couldn’t believe it. We looked JUST like the picture on the product package when we got done. So pleased all that hair won’t be in my house.
Our dog likes to be brushed, so she loved it, but our old dog, who hated brushes would never have stood for it. If you dog doesn’t like the pin type brushes, they won’t enjoy this either.
This has got to be the best pet product I’ve bought ever and I highly recommend it!
