This movie is something of a departure for Sam Elliott, but he, as always, pulls it off masterfully. Like fine wine, he just gets better with age.

I think that the great strength of the film is its mood. Rather than a rousing story, although the story is interesting enough, watching it is just a pleasurable experience. The characters are believable, the scenery incredible (although it was shot in Canada rather than in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness), and is suitable for the entire family.

If you are a fan of Elliott and/or just plain old good movies, then you should enjoy this one.

I purchased this friction mount for my Garmin Nuvi 1390T GPS. It does not have a rubber base like the older friction mounts used for my Garmin StreetPilot C330, so I expected some sliding on the dash as I drove. However that expectation proved to be unfounded as this friction mount stayed in place (keep in mind that I do not travel “off road”.) There is not much more that I can add that has not been stated by other reviewers. I am happy with the purchase and feel that the price paid was very reasonable.

One great dance number by Fred Astaire and two great Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer songs redeem this minor Astaire movie. The Sky’s the Limit tells the story of Fred Atwell (Fred Astaire), a Flying Tiger ace pilot, brought home to make special public appearances with other aces before returning to the war. But he decides to take a few days unofficial leave, jumps off his train and makes his way to New York. There he happens to see Joan Manion (Joan Leslie), an ace photographer, sitting at the bar of the Cosmopolitan Club with her boss, magazine owner Phil Harriman (Robert Benchley). It may not be love at first sight, exactly, but a combination of vivid attraction with a smattering of lust. Atwell pursues her relentlessly, even finding a place to stay in her rooming house, until she relents. She’s attracted to him, but his story of not being interested in work bothers her. After all, everyone should be working to help the war effort. He’s keeping the fact that he’s an ace fighter pilot a secret. Since he has only five days before he must rejoin his group and return to the Pacific, he’s got to cut corners and work fast. But complications arise. The “I don’t like to work” line blows up in his face; she thinks he’s a war-time dead beat; he doesn’t want to tell her the truth and that he’s in love. He knows he must leave her because he has to go back to the fighting. But wouldn’t you know…her boss, who loves her, too…sets things up so that Joan learns the truth, and just in time for them both to declare their love. We leave them with Fred’s plane climbing the sky toward Australia, and Joan looking skyward after him with a prayer for his safety.

This is a Fred Astaire movie?

Actually, it’s a wartime morale booster that stars Astaire. I’m sure the audiences back in 1943 left the movie houses having enjoyed themselves, but with a feeling of poignant hope about the dedication and sacrifice the war effort is calling for. Sixty years later, however, what are we left with

It baffles me to no end that anyone would give this book a five star rating or that it is considered a literary classic with a “powerful” theme. Not only is it intellectually barren, but is horribly written. Tedious and repetetive, it is literally the worst book I have ever encountered. It should be banned, not because of controversial language or subject matter, but so it cannot be inflicted on humanity any longer. It is truly a crime that this book is elevated to a position of equality with works like To Kill a Mockingbird.

great customer service. i had just purchased the weight machine the day before, and i tripped over it, opening one of the feet. after that, it didn’t work correctly.

i called the phone number listed on the instruction manual, and i got bill geronimo, the owner of the company. he worked with me on the phone to try and solve the problem, and when we couldn’t he offered to send me a new one.

good guy, great customer service, and good product.
Hunters in the Sky

At first reading, the common reaction to this book is that it is refreshingly extraordinary, but like all exquisite prostitutes, they remain what they are; prostitutes. This book has only one purpose – to deceive. The most believable lies are those mixed with a pint of truth, those mixed with a dose of familiarity and that is what this book is all about. I just want to pose a warning to those who are Christians – This book will send you to hell. This book is what Ephesians 4:14 is talking about. He who has ears, let him hear.

“The Day the Sky Exploded” is an Italian sci-fi melodrama from 1961, and is both boring and long. The plot boils down to this: an American astronaut on an international space mission to circumnavigate the moon blasts off in his atomic rocket, but after a malfunction he has to abort the mission and return to Earth. He forgets to destroy the atomic rocket and the missile explodes in space altering the course of numerous asteroids toward Earth. After subplots about the air conditioning in mission control (!) and the UN proving their inability to do anything but hold hearings (at least that part of the film is accurate) the brain trust gets the idea to launch nuclear weapons at the asteroids and destroy them before their terrestrial impact, thus enabling a bevy of future knockoff films with essentially identical plots.

The film has very poor production values and even worse acting, especially from the wife (Fiorella Mari) and son (Massimo Zeppieri) of astronaut John McLaren (Paul Hubschmid): if there is an lifetime overacting award in Italian cinema, Mari definitely should win it. The film is absolutely full of garbage science and stock footage, but if you are interested in a relatively rare, campy sci-fi monstrosity in glorious black and white, this film may be for you.
